UPDATE: Climate action group Rising Tide has urgently requested the Newcastle Council to relocate its upcoming protestival from Richardson Park back to Foreshore Park. This request comes just days before an extraordinary council meeting set for August 12, 2025, where a crucial decision will be made.
Rising Tide organizer Alexa Stuart emphasized that moving to Foreshore Park would address significant safety concerns highlighted by the NSW Police. “We believe this amendment is an important part of that cooperation and negotiation,” she stated. Foreshore Park previously hosted a successful event in 2024, centralizing activities and enhancing traffic, parking, and pedestrian safety.
The climate concert will continue to take place at Camp Shortland, as initially planned. The event, dubbed the 2025 People’s Blockade, has received overwhelming public support, with 1,855 submissions filed to the council—an impressive 86 percent of which back Rising Tide’s application.
The Newcastle East Residents Group (NERG) praised the festival for fostering a joyful and peaceful atmosphere, describing it as a vital community gathering that attracted numerous visitors. “The message calling for climate justice was delivered in a festive and family-friendly way,” said a representative from NERG.
However, as anticipation builds, industry and business leaders have raised alarms over the potential disruptions. Last year’s protest resulted in 170 arrests when activists defied police orders, underscoring the tensions surrounding this year’s event.
Stuart remains hopeful that the council will heed the community’s wishes and approve the application. “We have been working cooperatively with council staff and councillors for months,” she said. The decision on the venue change is pivotal, as it will not only impact the logistics of the protestival but also reflect the council’s stance on climate activism in the region.
As the council meeting approaches, all eyes will be on Newcastle to see if they will support Rising Tide’s vision for a united climate action event. This development is one to watch closely, as the council’s decision could set a precedent for future protests and community events in the city.
