Ruby Watts Claims Back-to-Back Best and Fairest Awards

UPDATE: In a stunning display of talent, Ruby Watts of Macedon has secured her second consecutive Riddell District Football League women’s best and fairest award. The announcement was made during a ceremony on September 27, 2023, where Watts dominated the medal count with an impressive 35 votes, outpacing Melton’s Pauline Hutchins by a staggering 13 votes.

Watts’s victory comes on the heels of a triumphant season where her team, the Cats, celebrated back-to-back premierships. Reflecting on her performance, Watts said, “It was really good, I enjoyed it. I had a really good time with the girls this season.” Her enthusiasm resonates with fans, underscoring the impact of teamwork in achieving success.

Chris Nolan, co-coach of the Cats, praised Watts for her adaptability throughout the season, stating he challenged her to explore different roles on the field. “It was really good and I enjoyed challenging myself playing in different positions,” Watts noted, highlighting her versatility as she moved between midfield, defense, and forward positions.

In addition to her football accolades, Watts embraced a new challenge this year by taking up umpiring, a role she had always wanted to pursue. “Taking it up this year was a lot, but I enjoyed it,” she said, showcasing her commitment to the sport beyond just playing.

Watts, who previously played for Carlton in the Victorian Football League Women’s competition, expressed her contentment with her current team, affirming, “There’s been a few clubs that have reached out to me, but Macedon is where I belong. I really enjoy it there.” She is already looking forward to the next season, stating, “I definitely will be going back to Macedon next year.”

As the football season wraps up, Watts will transition to cricket, returning to the field with Gisborne. In a clean sweep of honors, she also received the player of the year award and was named one of five Cats to the team of the year, alongside Brianna Woodburn, Lilli Collins, Charlotte Noonan, and Taya Konis. Nolan was recognized as coach of the year, further solidifying the Cats’ dominance in the league.

This remarkable season for Watts and her team highlights the emotional investment and passion within the sport, making it a story worth sharing. With strong performances and a commitment to excellence, the Cats are set to continue their legacy in the upcoming season.
