UPDATE: The first-ever salami festa is set to kick off at the Veneto Club in Melbourne on August 30-31, and the stakes are high for local smallgoods makers. Home chefs are keeping their recipes under wraps, with many vying for the coveted titles of “best” and “most innovative” salami, each winning $500 and, more importantly, bragging rights.
Joe Morello, the club’s executive manager, emphasizes the competitive spirit, remarking, “People don’t like to give away their secrets. It’s a bit like the Colonel’s 11 secret herbs and spices.” This two-day event promises to be a thrilling mix of culinary competition and community engagement, with the potential to establish an annual tradition.
The Veneto Club, founded in 1967, has faced challenges in recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing construction of the North-East Link freeway, which has impacted its operations. Despite this, the club has adapted, selling takeaway and online deli products to survive. General manager Kon Monos hopes the festa will re-establish the club in the marketplace and attract new members.
As part of the competition, Morello plans to enter his homemade Calabrian-style salami, a recipe passed down through generations. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Monos shared, reflecting on his childhood experiences with Italian friends making salami in Preston.
The festival, open to the public for a $15 entry fee (children under 12 free), will feature a variety of stalls offering pizza, cheeses, cannoli, spritz drinks, and more. Live entertainment will include performances by the Veneto Club choir, a regional Italian music band, and a jazz ensemble, ensuring a festive atmosphere.
Salami entries must be submitted by August 29 at either the Veneto Club or Artisan’s Bottega in Epping. Judging will take place on August 31 starting at noon, with a panel that includes 3AW journalist Tony Tardio and City of Manningham Mayor Deirdre Diamante. Winners will be announced at 3 PM on the same day.
This salami competition is more than just a contest; it’s a celebration of community, tradition, and culinary artistry. With excitement building, the Veneto Club’s first salami festa is poised to be a memorable event for all involved. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to taste and celebrate local flavors!
