UPDATE: South Bunbury’s Leon Kickett has officially joined the Fremantle Dockers, having been selected in the 2025 AFL Rookie Draft held on Friday, July 14, 2025. After being overlooked in the National Draft earlier this week, Kickett’s name was finally called, bringing a wave of excitement to the young athlete.
Reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster, Kickett stated, “It was a bit upsetting (on Thursday night), not seeing my name get called out. But having the call up today and getting it all was exciting.” His perseverance has paid off, marking a significant milestone in his football career.
Kickett transitioned from the South Bunbury Tigers to join Swan Districts in the WAFL, where he shone in the Colt’s campaign last season, leading to his elevation to the senior side. His impressive performance at the AFL National Draft Combine showcased his athleticism, proving he is a player to watch as he steps into professional football.
This isn’t the first time a Kickett has donned the purple jersey. Leon’s cousin, Dale Kickett, is a notable figure in the club’s history, having played 135 games for the Dockers and earning a place in the WA Football Hall of Fame.
As part of an electrifying forward lineup, Kickett will join talents such as Shai Bolton, Patrick Voss, Jye Amiss, Josh Treacy, and the 2025 Rising Star, Murphy Reid. His addition is expected to enhance the Dockers’ forward craft with his elite speed and tackling pressure.
Kickett is among seven new recruits for the Dockers ahead of the 2026 season. Other notable additions include draftees Adam Sweid, Tobyn Murray, Toby Whan, and Ryder Luke, alongside former Demon Judd McVee and American player Mason Cox, who is set to join during the upcoming supplementary signing period.
Fans are eager to see how Kickett will integrate into the team and contribute to the Dockers’ pursuit of success in the upcoming season. With the excitement building around the club’s new roster, Kickett’s journey is just beginning, and supporters can expect thrilling performances ahead.
