UPDATE: Student filmmakers from the South West are making headlines as they compete for the coveted CinefestOZ prize! Eight finalists have been announced for the 2025 Cinesnaps Short Film Competition, showcasing the creative talents of high school students from Busselton, Bunbury, Albany, and Katanning. These original short films, ranging from three to five minutes, revolve around the compelling theme of “rip”.

Among the standout entries is Milla Patterson from Georgina Molloy Anglican School, who presents her film titled One Dress. The story follows Annabelle, whose attempt to borrow her sister’s dress for a disco leads to an unexpected disaster. This engaging narrative highlights the emotional stakes that resonate with young audiences.

In the Year 7-9 category, Liam Turnbull, Omkar Variya, and Cohen Hope from Bunbury Senior High School present Consp-RIP-acy. Their film features a hilarious, high-stakes courtroom adventure involving conspiracy theorists taking on the government, promising a blend of humor and tension that captivates viewers.

Students from Bunbury Catholic College, including Jana Worgan, Jade Turpin, Jasmine Elliott, and Abigail Fishlock, explore a thrilling twist in their film about a girl receiving a mysterious message during a walk through town. Meanwhile, Ethan Tomlinson from Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School unveils Reception, a chilling tale of Tim, who encounters a terrifying prank call while alone at a phone booth.

Additionally, Taylor Nuttall and Isabella Reid from Manea Senior College tackle the theme of consequences in their film Consequence, while classmates Jack Harris and Charlie Wallrodt share the poignant story of Paul in Erode, an office worker confronting his fading memory and a shocking truth after a party.

CinefestOZ’s community & education engagement manager, Scott Mills, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The theme sparked incredible creativity among students, with 61 emerging filmmakers entering the awards.” He extended heartfelt thanks to all participating students and the dedicated educators who inspire them, regardless of their specialization in media arts.

The films will be showcased during a red-carpet awards event on September 2, 2025, as part of the 18th annual CinefestOZ Film Festival. A panel of film professionals will judge the eight finalists ahead of the event, further emphasizing the significance of this competition in the film community.

Since its inception in 2011, the CinefestOZ Cinesnaps program has engaged over 60,000 students from the region, connecting them with industry professionals and fostering the next generation of filmmakers. As Western Australian film production continues to thrive, these young talents are poised to make a significant impact on the industry.

Stay tuned for updates as these student filmmakers prepare for an exciting showcase, reflecting their hard work and creativity in the world of cinema!
