Sunbury Claims Crucial Win in Bowls Victoria Pennant Showdown

UPDATE: Sunbury Bowls Club has just achieved a significant victory in the Bowls Victoria weekend pennant, prevailing over Deer Park 2 with a score of 86 (16) – 73 (2) on Saturday, October 21, 2023. This win solidifies Sunbury’s position in the standings, creating a crucial buffer against one of their closest competitors.

In a match that was anything but easy, Sunbury’s team rallied impressively. Club representative David Glennon expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “It was a good win against one of the stronger sides that are up there.” Deer Park was just behind Sunbury, sitting in third place, and a victory for them could have shifted the standings significantly.

In an impressive display, Mark Armstrong’s rink dominated the competition, winning their match 27-13. Lee Wesley also contributed significantly, finishing with a score of 26-15. Although Desmond Cann Jnr’s rink faced a setback, losing 25-12, the overall performance was strong enough to secure the win. Glennon remarked, “To get 16 points at Deer Park is very good. Not many teams will get that many points playing at Deer Park.”

This victory keeps Sunbury firmly in second place, now 14 points behind the undefeated leaders, Whittlesea. The club’s second team in division 2 also had a successful day, earning a draw against Keilor, propelling them into the top four.

Looking ahead, Sunbury will face Yarraville Footscray 2 this Saturday. Currently sitting in fifth place, Yarraville presents another tough challenge for Sunbury, which aims to maintain its momentum. Glennon noted the importance of the upcoming match, stating, “It will be another good test for the side.”

Meanwhile, in the Ballarat Highlands Bowls Region’s Highlands division 1 competition, both Kyneton and Kyneton Golf continued their strong form. Kyneton secured a decisive win against Trentham, scoring 72 (14) – 47 (2), while Kyneton Golf defeated Lancefield 63 (14) – 47 (2). With these results, Kyneton currently leads the standings ahead of Kyneton Golf.

In other matches, Diggers Rest triumphed over Broadbord with a score of 73 (15) – 45 (1), and Romsey beat Kilmore 78 (16) – 39 (0). Gisborne also dominated, clinching a win against Woodend with a score of 80 – 43.

As the season progresses, clubs are vying for top positions, making every game crucial. With the next matches on the horizon, fans and players alike are eager to see how the dynamics will unfold in this competitive league.
