UPDATE: Over 80 people gathered for a thrilling T20 cricket match in Sunshine West on 27 November, featuring players from the Sunshine Heights Cricket Club (SHCC) and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). This annual event, now in its fifth year, emphasizes community spirit, inclusion, and the unifying power of sport.
The match served as a vital connection point for Navy personnel, primarily from HMAS Cerberus, and local residents. According to SHCC committee member and RAN Leading Seaman (LS) Nick Magafas, the event was a resounding success. “It’s really about communication and people getting to know each other,” he stated, highlighting the friendly atmosphere that surrounded the game.
The festivities kicked off with a flag ceremony and the Ode of Remembrance, led by Sunshine RSL president Garry Collins. The event also featured a performance by the Navy Cadet unit TS Voyager, a complimentary BBQ, and an energetic DJ set, making it a vibrant community gathering.
In a competitive yet cordial spirit, SHCC emerged victorious in the match. However, as LS Magafas pointed out, “It’s more about communication and people getting to know each other a bit … There’s a great spirit about it.”
The SHCC team, captained by young Australian South Sudanese player Akat Mayoum, showcased a rich diversity, with players hailing from 11 different backgrounds, including South Sudanese, First Nations, Sri Lankan, Tamil, Greek, Indian, Pakistani, Macedonian, Afghan, Chinese, and English origins. “That’s not by design, that’s the way we are. People just feel comfortable,” LS Magafas noted.
This cricket match transcends sports, standing as a powerful reminder of diversity and the importance of inclusivity. “It doesn’t matter where you come from, you can be a part of it,” LS Magafas emphasized.
As the community celebrates this annual tradition, the event not only strengthens bonds but also fosters a sense of belonging among participants. With the success of this year’s match, anticipation is already building for the next gathering, promising to unite even more players and residents in the spirit of sport and camaraderie.
