URGENT UPDATE: Thailand’s military is on high alert following a landmine incident that severely injured a soldier near the border with Cambodia. Officials warn they may need to “exercise the right of self-defense” in response to escalating tensions and repeated violations they attribute to Cambodian forces.
On Tuesday morning, a Thai sergeant, part of a patrol unit of eight soldiers, stepped on an anti-personnel landmine allegedly planted by Cambodia. The incident occurred approximately 1 kilometer from the Ta Muen Thom temple, a disputed site claimed by both nations, inflicting severe injuries to the soldier’s left ankle.
This latest incident marks the fourth landmine-related injury in just a month and the second since a ceasefire was established on July 29, 2023. The ceasefire aimed to halt five days of intense armed clashes that claimed the lives of dozens and displaced over 260,000 people.
Thai Army spokesman Major General Winthai Suvaree stated, “This incident serves as clear evidence that the Cambodian side has violated the ceasefire agreement and shows no respect for international humanitarian law, particularly the Ottawa Convention, which prohibits the use of anti-personnel landmines.”
Just last Saturday, another Thai soldier suffered severe injuries, including the loss of his left foot, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by troops along the contentious border.
Thailand’s military insists it has remained committed to peaceful resolutions while emphasizing that continued violations by Cambodia may force them to reconsider their stance. “Should circumstances become compelling, it may be necessary to exercise the right of self-defense under international law principles,” the statement warned.
In response, Cambodia’s Defense Ministry has vehemently denied the allegations, labeling them as “baseless” and “deliberately misleading.” Spokeswoman Lieutenant General Maly Socheata rejected Thailand’s claims regarding the injuries of its soldiers.
The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has historical roots, with previous clashes leading to significant casualties and strained diplomatic relations. Tensions have intensified since May, when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a confrontation, further complicating the already fragile relationship between the two nations.
As the situation develops, both countries are urged to adhere to international agreements and seek peaceful resolutions to avoid further escalation. Observers are closely monitoring the situation, as any military action could have dire consequences for the region.
This incident not only underscores the human cost of the ongoing territorial dispute but also highlights the urgent need for dialogue and resolution to prevent further loss of life.
