UPDATE: The Great Global Mend is set to take place on Saturday, October 11, 2023, with residents from 16 Perth councils joining forces in an ambitious unofficial world record attempt. Participants will gather at the Hillview Intercultural Community Centre in Bentley at 11:00 AM to mend clothing and textiles simultaneously, aiming to combat textile waste and promote sustainable fashion.
This innovative event, organized in partnership with FabPatch and the Circular Fashion Festival, invites everyone—from seasoned stitchers to curious beginners—to repair their worn-out items and learn valuable sustainability practices. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own needles, threads, and mending supplies, ready to breathe new life into their garments.
“It’s inspiring to see 16 local governments come together to champion the value of repairing over discarding,” said Mayor Patrick Hall of the City of Canning. He emphasized that this event is about more than just breaking a record; it’s a vital movement against the throwaway culture that dominates today’s society. “Repairing is an act of resistance,” he added, urging residents to participate and help create a shift towards community-driven solutions to textile waste.
Participants will have access to a FabPatch station offering free rub-on patches, as well as a communal mending space where they can share personal repair stories and tips on sustainability. The event promises to be a powerful gathering focused on collaboration, creativity, and environmental consciousness.
The City of Cockburn and the City of Melville will also join in the Great Global Mend celebrations at their respective locations including the South Lake Ottey Family and Neighbourhood Centre and local libraries.
This event is expected to draw significant participation, reflecting a growing global movement toward sustainable practices in the fashion industry. As the countdown to 11:00 AM begins, excitement is building for what could be a record-breaking moment in mending history.
