URGENT UPDATE: Timber plantation planting has officially begun at Rock House Farm in Kyneton, thanks to a substantial investment of $94,350 from the Victoria Carbon Farming Program. This funding, announced earlier today, is set to empower local farmers and contribute significantly to environmental sustainability.
Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas hailed the initiative, stating, “This is such an amazing initiative – supporting our local farmers and communities in practical ways that make a real difference on the ground.” The first phase of planting has already been completed, covering 10 percent of the total area designated for this project, with more to come in the following year.
The ambitious project will establish a 19-hectare mixed species timber plantation, developed in partnership with forestry service provider wood4good. This initiative is a part of a broader strategy to diversify farmers’ income streams by cultivating trees for various purposes, including shade, shelter, erosion control, and timber production. Notably, the project aims to offset on-farm emissions, making it a pivotal step towards sustainable agriculture.
Using a method known as regenerative forestry, Rock House Farm is set to restore the land to a thriving condition. Over the next 25 years, this project is expected to sequester approximately 7,000 tonnes of carbon, showcasing its potential for significant environmental impact.
The plantation will not only focus on timber production but will also deliver a multitude of ecological benefits. These include enhancing water and soil health, boosting agricultural land productivity, and improving biodiversity. Once the trees mature, the farm will enjoy enhanced shade and shelter for livestock, alongside a new revenue stream from the harvesting of wood products.
As the project unfolds, it represents a critical development in sustainable farming practices, directly impacting local communities and the environment. Stay tuned for more updates as Rock House Farm continues its journey towards a greener future.
