UPDATE: Two individuals, including a 16-year-old girl and a 21-year-old man, have been charged with assaulting police officers in separate incidents in Canberra on November 3, 2023. This rapid escalation of violence against law enforcement has raised alarms among local authorities.
In the first incident, police responded to a disturbance at a home in O’Connor around 9:00 AM. Officers were called to the scene due to reports of the teenage girl behaving aggressively. When they attempted to engage with her, she allegedly threw a drink at one of the officers, hitting him directly. As police tried to arrest her, she became combative, allegedly resisting and spitting in an officer’s face. She now faces multiple charges, including two counts of assault against a frontline community service provider, resisting a territory official, and breach of the peace. The girl is scheduled to appear in the ACT Children’s Court on November 4.
In a separate incident later that evening at approximately 11:30 PM, police on foot patrol identified the 21-year-old man from Casey violating his bail conditions. When officers called for him to stop, he fled, prompting a foot chase. Upon apprehension, he allegedly headbutted and kicked an officer during the arrest. He has been charged with resisting a territory public official and assault against a frontline community service provider. He will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court also on November 4.
These incidents come amid growing concerns for the safety of police officers in the region.
ACT Policing urges the public to respect law enforcement and cooperate during interactions.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and both cases highlight the urgent need for dialogue around community-police relations.
As these cases unfold, residents are reminded of the importance of maintaining safety and respect within the community. Further updates are expected following the court appearances on Saturday.
