UPDATE: The Boorloo Bridge remains closed following a serious incident where a section of light casing fell onto a pedestrian walkway, narrowly missing a cyclist. The incident occurred just before 5 PM on October 23, 2023, prompting immediate inspections and repairs by local authorities.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti confirmed that about 70 meters of light casing detached from the structure, plunging into the Swan River and onto the pathway below. “The contractors involved have been working overnight to inspect and re-fasten the casing,” Saffioti stated. The bridge is expected to remain closed for at least two days as safety checks continue.
The incident has raised significant concerns among the public, especially after it was reported that the falling casing nearly struck a female cyclist. “I’m always thankful and grateful when these things happen that we don’t have injuries,” said Saffioti.
Officials are conducting thorough inspections of the bridge to ensure no further issues arise. Premier Roger Cook expressed confidence in the integrity of the bridge, describing the situation as typical “teething problems” associated with new infrastructure. “Out of an abundance of caution, Main Roads have shut the bridge to inspect the other plastic casings,” Cook added.
Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas emphasized the importance of transparency, urging the government to explain the incident to the public. “The people of Western Australia deserve to know what happened, why it occurred, and will they be safe using that bridge into the future,” he stated, highlighting the potential dangers involved.
The Boorloo Bridge, opened less than a year ago, was awarded the title of “Western Australia Project of the Year” at the 2025 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards. Despite the current crisis, Saffioti defended the bridge’s construction, noting its recognition in international competitions.
As cyclists and joggers are redirected to the nearby Causeway Bridge, the community anxiously awaits updates on the repairs. Authorities report that local teams are on-site and actively addressing the situation, which provides some reassurance.
The bridge’s closure is a developing story that highlights the importance of infrastructure safety. Stay tuned for further updates on this urgent situation as inspections continue and repairs are made.
