NEW REPORTS CONFIRM: Australian avocado growers produced 131,385 tonnes of avocados for FY2024/25, with a gross value of production (GVP) reaching AUD$794 million. This significant surge in value—up 22.34 percent from the previous year—comes despite a slight dip in volume, highlighting a strong domestic demand.
Avocados Australia’s latest “Facts at a Glance Report” reveals that while production increased, export numbers have taken a hit. Australia exported only 14,235 tonnes of avocados, marking a drastic 35 percent decrease compared to the previous period. This decline is attributed to a lighter crop year, prompting ongoing efforts to boost both domestic consumption and export opportunities.
John Tyas, CEO of Avocados Australia, emphasized the report’s key findings, stating, “The value of production has increased, reflecting growth in domestic demand and export markets.” He noted that Australian avocados are consistently high quality, which enhances consumer confidence and encourages repeat purchases.
In terms of regional contributions, Queensland led production with 76,501 tonnes, accounting for 58 percent of the total output, followed by Western Australia with 36,889 tonnes. However, domestic consumption saw a decrease, with Australians consuming 4.74 kg per person in 2024/25, down from 4.94 kg in 2023/24. The drop in consumption reflects the lighter domestic supply, but forecasts suggest production could rise to around 170,000 tonnes annually within the next two years.
Avocados continue to be a highly regarded product, both locally and internationally. Tyas reiterated, “When you eat an Australian avocado, you can be confident that it is safe, nutritious, and delicious.” The avocado industry remains committed to enhancing its export program, working closely with international partners to promote Australian avocados globally.
