UPDATE: Australia is bracing for a mixed bag of weather this Christmas, with the Bureau of Meteorology’s latest forecast revealing a stark contrast between regions. Farmers across the nation are anxiously hoping for favorable conditions as they prepare for the holiday season.
New reports confirm that some areas will experience a scorcher while others may face bushfire risks due to soaring temperatures. Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury warns that hot conditions will sweep through southern Australia over the weekend, bringing with it high fire danger ratings and thunderstorms.
Residents in Victoria and New South Wales can expect temperatures soaring into the mid to high 30s this weekend. However, significant rainfall is also on the horizon, with forecasts indicating 10 to 20 millimeters in parts of Victoria and double-digit rainfall expected in the Riverina and Central West of NSW on Sunday.
As temperatures remain high, isolated thunderstorms are predicted to develop across the eastern states, with Christmas Day temperatures settling around the mid-20s for central and southeastern regions. Meanwhile, northern regions of South Australia and inland areas will face extreme heat, potentially exceeding 39 degrees.
In Queensland, meteorologists are keeping a close watch on the potential for multiple days of modest rainfall which could significantly affect agricultural areas. The state is expected to see a warm and humid weekend, with temperatures reaching the high-30s in some inland districts.
Over in the Northern Territory, a developing tropical low pressure system is set to enhance rainfall conditions, particularly across eastern regions. This system is anticipated to bring widespread showers and humidity leading into Christmas, while the Kimberley region may experience daily storms.
In stark contrast, Western Australia will enjoy mostly dry and clear conditions leading up to Christmas Eve, with soaring temperatures across the northern interior reaching low-40s. Perth is slated for a hot and dry Christmas Day, with temperatures expected to hit 39 degrees.
Meanwhile, Tasmania is gearing up for a typical festive season marked by unsettled weather. With patchy showers expected over the weekend, residents in Hobart could find themselves facing a cool Christmas Day, with temperatures forecasted to be around 17 degrees.
With fire dangers escalating and unpredictable weather patterns emerging, Australians are urged to stay informed and prepared as they head into the holiday season. The next few days will be critical as conditions shift, making it essential for farmers and families alike to monitor updates closely.
As weather patterns develop, residents are encouraged to take precautions and stay tuned for further updates from the Bureau of Meteorology.
