Vietnamese Stories Come to Life in Free Documentary Event

UPDATE: A powerful new documentary and musical performance showcasing the experiences of Vietnamese immigrants in Australia over the past 50 years will debut on November 29, 2023, at the Bowery Theatre in St Albans. This free event, organized by the Australian Vietnamese Arts and Culture (AVAC), promises to deliver gripping personal stories from local residents who have navigated the challenges of migration.

The documentary, titled ‘Our Brimbank – A Half-Century Home’, presents firsthand accounts of the Vietnamese community’s journey, highlighting the perilous escape from their homeland. AVAC President Mai Nguyen emphasized the emotional weight of these narratives, stating, “Audiences will see and hear exactly what Vietnamese locals experienced… from running away from their own country, to being in the middle of life and death at the ocean via little boats.”

The documentary will not only recount the hardships faced by these immigrants but also celebrate their resilience and contributions to Australian society. Nguyen poignantly remarked, “How lucky they were compared with thousands of people who never reached the land and died at sea.”

In addition to the documentary, the event will feature a musical performance titled ‘My Story, Our Story’. This artistic showcase will illuminate the Vietnamese community’s evolution through the medium of performing arts, further enriching the audience’s understanding of their rich cultural tapestry.

Nguyen expressed her pride in presenting this event, stating, “AVAC is very happy and proud to have this documentary and the musical performance presented to the community to achieve our purpose of preserving history and celebrating Australia, the country that opened its arms to us.”

The event will take place in two segments, from 2 to 5 PM and 6 to 9 PM. It aims to draw in community members and supporters eager to engage with these vital stories.
