UPDATE: Woodend Cricket Club launched its season with a stunning victory, defeating Broadford by a decisive 133 runs in the opening match of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association on July 15, 2023. This emphatic win sets a promising tone for the season ahead, as the team aims to build on last year’s performance.
Coach Josh Eastley expressed confidence in his squad, emphasizing that last season’s strong showing laid a solid foundation. “We were back in finals after winning 11 games, which was a significant improvement,” Eastley stated. “It was disappointing not to reach the grand final, but we know exactly where we need to enhance our skills.”
In a thrilling start, Woodend faced Broadford, who won the toss and chose to bat first. Broadford struggled, collapsing for just 134 runs in the 38th over. Highlighting Woodend’s bowling prowess, newcomer Jacques Du Toit shone with three wickets. “We were a little scratchy early, but once we settled, we took control,” Eastley reflected.
Woodend swiftly chased down the target, finishing at 2-135 in just 25 overs. Captain Marcus Stewart led the charge, scoring an impressive 49 not out as the top order contributed significantly. Eastley remarked on the excitement of integrating new talent, including Du Toit, who brings a wealth of international experience. “His knowledge from high-level cricket overseas is invaluable,” he noted.
The addition of young players, such as Oliver Price, who returned to Woodend after playing junior cricket, signals a strategic focus on nurturing talent for the future. Eastley is eager to see how these fresh faces will evolve throughout the season.
Next on the agenda, Woodend will face Wallan in round two. “It’s been a long time since I played against Wallan, and I know many of their fathers from back in the day,” Eastley added, hinting at the emotional stakes in this upcoming match.
In other matches on Saturday, Romsey triumphed over Sunbury United thanks to a pivotal 111 runs from Taylor Stevenson, while Macedon secured a win against Wallan. A brilliant century from Jarryd Vernon propelled Gisborne to victory over Rupertswood.
With the season now underway, all eyes will be on Woodend as they strive to capitalize on their early momentum and aim for a successful campaign. Fans and players alike are buzzing with anticipation for the challenges that lie ahead.
