UPDATE: The Yarra Ranges Council has just announced critical advocacy priorities for the next two years during a meeting on November 25, 2023. This strategic update is pivotal as they prepare to approach both state and federal governments for funding on essential projects that directly impact the community.
WHY THIS MATTERS: In a challenging financial climate, local leaders stress that these priorities are not just important — they are urgent. As Ryrie Ward councillor Fiona McAllister pointed out, securing substantial funding is becoming increasingly difficult as both state and federal allocations dwindle week by week.
The council’s advocacy agenda includes key initiatives such as strengthening youth services, funding for 10 safer crossings, and developing a comprehensive ‘Greenprint’ for sustainability. These priorities aim to address pressing community needs, from enhancing public safety to promoting affordable housing solutions.
KEY INITIATIVES: Among the top requests from the council are:
– Expanding the Mental Health & Wellbeing Local services, particularly in the Upper Yarra and Yarra Valley regions.
– Upgrading dangerous crossings in locations such as Kallista, Lilydale, and Yarra Junction.
– Securing $1.5 million over four years to develop ecological strategies, and asking for $20 million to establish an indoor aquatic and leisure centre.
– Funding the Birrarung/Yarra River crossing project with a request of $11 million.
Council members are acutely aware of the urgency of their requests. Billanook Ward councillor Tim Heenan emphasized that local government cannot meet these needs alone, highlighting the necessity for both state and federal support.
In recent successes, the council secured $5.76 million from the federal Thriving Suburbs Program to rebuild the pavilion at Don Road Reserve and an additional $3 million for the Warburton Bike Park, showcasing the potential impact of effective advocacy.
As the council prepares for a state election in 2024, they are committed to a focused and unified approach.
“We have to do the hard yards,”
said Jim Child, O’Shannassy Ward councillor, reinforcing the importance of persistence in advocacy efforts.
WHAT’S NEXT: The council will actively engage with relevant government departments to push for the funding necessary to realize these initiatives. The community is urged to stay informed and involved as the council strives for impactful changes that will resonate throughout the Yarra Ranges.
With local leaders rallying for crucial support, the call for action is clear. The Yarra Ranges community must unite to ensure their voices are heard in the corridors of power.
