Bridge Collapse in China Claims Lives of 12 Workers

A railway bridge under construction in northwest China’s Qinghai province collapsed early on March 15, 2024, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 workers, with four others still missing. The incident occurred around 03:00 local time when a steel cable snapped during a tensioning operation. According to state media reports from the Xinhua News Agency, the collapse left a significant gap in the bridge’s curved aquamarine arch, causing part of the deck to hang precariously over the Yellow River.

The bridge, which spans 1.6 kilometers and stands 55 metres above the river’s surface, was in a critical phase of construction when the tragedy occurred. Aerial images from the Xinhua News Agency illustrate the extent of the damage, showcasing the missing section of the arch and the bent deck that now dangles towards the water below.

Search and rescue operations have been initiated swiftly, employing boats, a helicopter, and robotic devices to locate the missing workers. At the time of the incident, there were 16 workers present on the bridge, highlighting the scale of the operation and the urgency of finding those unaccounted for.

As the rescue efforts continue, authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances that led to the collapse. This incident marks a significant tragedy in a region that is increasingly investing in infrastructure to support its growing population and economy.

Local officials have expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and are committed to ensuring that such incidents are thoroughly examined to improve safety standards in construction practices. The continuing search for the four missing workers underscores the human toll of this disaster, as families await news of their loved ones.
