Cloudflare has successfully restored its services after a significant outage disrupted access to numerous major internet platforms, including X and ChatGPT. The outage, which began around 10:30 PM AEDT on Tuesday, affected thousands of users globally, prompting widespread reports of accessibility issues.
The company identified the cause of the outage as an automatically generated configuration file meant to manage potential security threats. This file became excessively large, leading to a crash in the software system that handles traffic for several of Cloudflare’s services. The company, which manages approximately 20 percent of all web traffic, has initiated an investigation and deployed a fix. However, it warned that some customers might still experience disruptions as services recover worldwide.
Following the outage, Cloudflare’s shares fell by 2.3 percent in morning trading. Fortunately, the company stated that there was “no evidence that this was the result of an attack or caused by malicious activity.”
Cloudflare operates one of the largest networks globally, which enhances website performance and safeguards against surges in traffic and cyber threats. This incident follows a previous outage at Amazon’s cloud service, which caused significant disruptions to various popular websites and applications, including Snapchat and Reddit.
The recent service failure impacted several notable platforms, including Canva, Grindr, and Shopify. Users reported these issues through outage-tracking service Downdetector, which saw reports peak at over 11,000 before declining to approximately 2,800 by 2:20 AM AEDT.
Moody’s credit ratings service also experienced difficulties, displaying an Error Code 500 and directing users to Cloudflare’s website for more information. As the outage unfolded, Cloudflare noted, “We saw a spike in unusual traffic to one of Cloudflare’s services beginning at 11:20 UTC. That caused some traffic passing through Cloudflare’s network to experience errors.”
Despite the swift restoration of services, the outage has raised concerns about the reliability of internet infrastructure, especially as more businesses and users depend on these platforms for daily operations. As of now, OpenAI and other affected companies have not responded to requests for comment regarding the impact of the outage on their services.
Cloudflare’s quick response to the situation has been crucial in minimizing the disruption, but the event serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities inherent in modern web infrastructure. As investigations continue, the focus will likely shift to ensuring that such incidents are prevented in the future.
