Prof. Guo Yike Elected as International Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering

Prof. Guo Yike, Provost and Chair Professor at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been elected as an International Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). This prestigious recognition highlights his significant contributions to the Information and Electronics Engineering Division. Membership in the CAE is one of the highest academic honors in engineering sciences and technology.

In expressing his gratitude, Prof. Guo stated, “I am deeply honored to have been elected an International Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and sincerely thank for this recognition. This distinguished accolade not only affirms my own scientific journey but also celebrates the collective efforts of my team and collaborators.” He also acknowledged the support from Hong Kong, which he described as a vital platform for advancing scientific research. Prof. Guo reaffirmed his commitment to advancing data science and artificial intelligence while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation that serves society.

HKUST President Nancy IP shared in the celebration, stating, “We extend our warmest congratulations to Prof. Guo on his election as an International Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. His contributions to artificial intelligence, coupled with his leadership in developing Hong Kong’s first generative AI large language model, have brought tremendous momentum to HKUST and the city’s innovation and technology ecosystem.” She emphasized that this honor is a testament to his scientific leadership and is likely to inspire future talents in the field.

Prof. Guo is a renowned computer scientist with an impressive career spanning over three decades at Imperial College London before his appointment at HKUST in 2020. His research focuses on large-scale scientific applications, including distributed data mining methods and machine learning systems applicable in various fields such as biology, healthcare, and finance.

Since taking on the role of Provost in December 2022, he has actively led initiatives to integrate advanced technologies into university curricula and attract global talent. Under his leadership, HKUST has established itself as a leader in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The university ranks 17th globally and 1st in China in this field, reflecting its commitment to pioneering AI innovation.

HKUST’s School of Engineering continues to excel in both teaching and research, as evidenced by its performance in global rankings. In the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject, HKUST placed 28th in Computer Science and 33rd in Engineering. Furthermore, the 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject ranked the university 29th in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and 43rd in Engineering & Technology. These rankings underscore HKUST’s position as Hong Kong’s top performer in these disciplines.

Prof. Guo’s election to the CAE not only marks an individual achievement but also enhances HKUST’s reputation in the global academic community, further driving the university’s mission to foster innovation and contribute to the advancement of engineering and technology.
