Coquette Announces Relocation to New Space in Charlotte

French restaurant Coquette has announced plans to relocate in January 2024, following the recent purchase of its current building. The restaurant, which is currently located at 400 South Tryon St., will move to a larger, 5,300-square-foot space at 101 South Tryon St. in the city’s District One. This transition will take place after Coquette continues its operations in its existing location through the end of the year.

The new site was previously occupied by Essex Bar & Bistro, which has been serving patrons since 2016 but will close its doors by the end of this month. The move comes as part of Coquette’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its dining experience, establishing a stronger presence in a vibrant area of Charlotte.

Founded by Jill Marcus, Coquette offers a fine-dining experience inspired by Parisian buvettes. The menu features a variety of culinary delights, including oysters, charcuterie, and pastries, as well as standout entrees such as Duck Fat Fried Chicken and Filet D’Agneau au Fenouil Confit (lamb loin with slow-cooked fennel). The restaurant aims to provide a refined yet welcoming atmosphere, described on its website as “your neighborhood escape to France,” complete with curated French wines and cocktails.

Marcus, who also leads the Mother Earth Group and operates other concepts like Something Classic Catering and Mariposa, draws inspiration from personal experiences during her college studies in Brittany, France. Her passion for French culture and cuisine has been pivotal in shaping Coquette’s offerings, allowing her to share her culinary vision with the Charlotte community.

Behind the kitchen is Stefano Gallo, the head chef at Coquette. Originally hailing from Italy, Gallo has honed his skills at esteemed restaurants throughout Italy, Switzerland, London, and New York. His expertise contributes significantly to the restaurant’s reputation for quality and authenticity.

As Coquette prepares for this significant transition, it continues to foster a deep appreciation for French gastronomy and culture within the local dining scene. The relocation to a more spacious venue is expected to enhance its ability to serve patrons while maintaining the intimate charm that defines the restaurant.
