Darwin City Celebrates Christmas Pageant with New Festive Events

The city centre of Darwin transformed into a festive hub last month, as thousands gathered to participate in the annual Christmas Pageant. This year’s celebrations were enhanced by two notable additions: the Christmas Concert and the City of Darwin’s Makers Market. Both events attracted large crowds and fostered a day-long celebration of community spirit and local culture.

Lord Mayor Peter Styles highlighted the significance of the strong turnout, stating that it reflects the community’s enthusiasm for events that promote togetherness. “This year, City of Darwin delivered an incredible Christmas pageant with new events offering something for everyone,” said Styles. He emphasized the vital role played by community groups, performers, schools, and volunteers in making the event a success.

The route for the Christmas Pageant was updated, and Civic Park became a central gathering spot, featuring food trucks that added to the festive atmosphere. Styles expressed gratitude to everyone involved, stating, “I would like to thank the community, attendees, sponsors, volunteers, and performers for coming together to celebrate the beginning of the Darwin festive season and making this year’s Pageant one to remember.”

The introduction of additional events encouraged attendees to spend more time in the city centre, which in turn supported local businesses. Aithne Archibald, General Manager of the Darwin City Retailers Association (DCRA), remarked on the success of the Makers Market, which featured 23 stallholders showcasing quality local products. “Seeing the city streets filled with families, friends, locals, and visitors enjoying this truly Darwin-flavored festive family day was such a buzz,” said Archibald. She noted that early feedback from retailers was positive, particularly as shops extended their hours for the holiday season.

Archibald also highlighted the importance of the Christmas Pageant in promoting the diverse range of shops, cafés, and restaurants in the city centre, especially as the Christmas shopping season approaches. The DCRA looks forward to continuing its partnership with the City of Darwin in future events.

In addition to the Pageant, the City of Darwin has announced further festive activities. Residents and visitors can enjoy **Santa’s Village**, which runs until December 20, 2024, from 09:00 to 13:30 at The Galleria, Smith Street. The 2025 Carols by Candlelight event is scheduled for December 7, 2025, from 17:30 to 21:00 at the Darwin Convention Centre. Additionally, a Casuarina Christmas Pool Party is set for December 13, 2024, from 08:30 to 12:00 at the Casuarina Aquatic and Leisure Centre.

The City of Darwin is actively seeking feedback from participants regarding the Christmas Pageant, encouraging people to share their thoughts for a chance to win one of five family passes to the City of Darwin pools. The festive season in Darwin is poised to continue engaging the community, celebrating local culture, and fostering connections among residents and visitors alike.
