A man has been charged following a motorcycle crash in Tyalgum that resulted in the death of a 69-year-old rider. The incident occurred at approximately 19:00 on October 26, 2025, when emergency services received reports of a collision on Tyalgum Creek Road.
Upon arrival, officers from the Tweed/Byron Police District discovered that a hatchback vehicle and the motorcycle had collided, causing the rider to be ejected from the motorbike. Despite efforts from a passerby to perform CPR, the rider could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the hatchback, an 87-year-old man, was not injured but was taken to hospital for mandatory testing. Following the incident, a crime scene was established, and the Crash Investigation Unit commenced a thorough investigation.
After extensive inquiries, on January 10, 2025, the elderly driver was issued a Court Attendance Notice. He faces several charges, including dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, and improper U-turns across dividing lines. As a result of these charges, his driver’s licence has been suspended.
The man is scheduled to appear in Murwillumbah Local Court on February 18, 2025, where he will respond to the charges against him. The investigation highlights the ongoing concerns regarding road safety and the consequences of dangerous driving practices.
