Preschoolers Celebrate Book Week with Spider-Man and Dorothy

Preschoolers at Batemans Bay Public School engaged in a lively celebration of Book Week, where they donned costumes of beloved characters like Spider-Man and Dorothy. The event, which welcomed more than 600 children dressed as their favourite figures from literature, film, and video games, aimed to ease the transition for young students preparing to start school. This annual occasion provided a fun and friendly atmosphere for children to meet their future classmates.

Fostering Connections and Readiness

Attending Book Week as Where’s Wally, preschool teacher Elisha Rosevear reflected on the joy of the event from her own childhood. “I remember doing it when I was in primary school,” she noted. “For schools as a whole, Book Week is amazing, but especially for our preschoolers and their transition, it’s great to be part of a whole school event that’s so relaxed and fun.”

Batemans Bay Public School accommodates two classes for 40 students on-site, which allows preschoolers to frequently visit the school and familiarise themselves with their new environment. Elisha explained that these visits make the transition to formal schooling less daunting. “Coming from our preschool space into our school, the transition isn’t as difficult as if you hadn’t had that on-site preschool experience,” she said. “There are so many opportunities to link in and feel supported, know the space, and feel comfortable.”

Building Relationships through Reading

Beyond familiarisation with the school environment, Book Week also plays a crucial role in helping children develop social connections. Elisha emphasised the importance of these relationships, stating, “We work really hard to ensure the children are ready for those big relationships between the preschoolers and their primary school peers.” Many children already have connections to older students, whether through neighbourhoods or family friends, making interactions more comfortable.

In addition to fostering social skills, Book Week promotes a love for reading. Elisha noted, “We read a vast array of books, lots of picture books, some factual books, lots of stories that would get their attention and get them interested in reading.” The programme aims to engage preschoolers in literature and stimulate their imaginations, preparing them for the academic journey ahead.

Book Week not only serves to introduce preschoolers to their future schoolmates but also equips them with essential skills for a successful transition. Through character costumes, engaging stories, and opportunities for connection, this event proves invaluable for young learners at Batemans Bay Public School.
