A new exhibition at the Australian Museum of Performing Arts is set to honor the legacy of legendary divas from various eras. Curated by Kate Bailey, the exhibition features a vast collection of artifacts, including costumes, jewellery, photography, and music, showcasing the influential figures who have shaped the performing arts landscape. It opens in Melbourne on Thursday and will run until April 26, 2024.
At the heart of this exhibition lies the celebration of artists who have defied norms and redefined the concept of a diva. As Ms. Bailey explains, “At the heart of this exhibition is a story of iconic performers who with creativity, courage and ambition have challenged the status quo and used their voice and their art to redefine and reclaim the diva.” This Australian exclusive features some of the most recognized names in the industry, spanning generations and genres.
Among the highlights is a stage ensemble worn by Maria Callas in her renowned 1952 performance of “Norma.” Visitors can also view Rihanna‘s striking Papal-inspired outfit from the 2018 Met Gala, complete with a jewel-encrusted robe and matching mitre. Additionally, the exhibition will showcase the elegant black-and-gold dress worn by Whitney Houston during her three Grammy Award victories for “The Bodyguard” soundtrack in 1994.
The exhibition does not solely focus on international icons; it also pays tribute to Australian talents. Dame Nellie Melba, Kylie Minogue, Peter Allen, and Olivia Newton-John are among the homegrown divas whose contributions to the world of performance are highlighted. The exhibition delves into the concept of “DIVAdom,” exploring how the term, which means goddess in Italian, has evolved and been embraced by various artists over time.
Visitors will experience a rich tapestry of artistry and resilience through a collection of exquisite couture gowns, show-stopping costumes, and intimate personal items. The exhibition aims to reflect the diverse narratives of these remarkable performers, who have used their platforms to challenge societal norms and inspire change.
As the exhibition opens its doors in Melbourne, attendees can expect an immersive experience celebrating the artistry and impact of these fabulous figures. This is not just a showcase of fashion and fame; it is a tribute to the power of creativity and the indomitable spirit of those who dare to dream.
