A new health food store, Common Supply, has opened in Bondi Beach, quickly gaining attention as locals flock to experience its offerings. The store, located at 182 Campbell Parade, has already drawn comparisons to the famed Erewhon market in Los Angeles. According to owner Jacob Hill, the concept emerged from a genuine demand for premium, healthy food options that are convenient for busy lifestyles.
On its opening weekend, the store attracted significant crowds, with long queues extending out the door. Hill described the response as “beyond what we ever expected,” noting that customers were not only enjoying the food but also connecting with the vibrant atmosphere. He shared, “The lines were non-stop, way beyond what we ever expected. The whole weekend was huge, it really took us by surprise.”
Distinctive Offerings and Popular Items
Common Supply features a modern aesthetic, complete with stainless steel benches and self-service iPads for ordering. The store incorporates elements of a grocery store, a DIY protein plate bar, a smoothie station, and a coffee counter. Build-your-own plates—comprised of one protein, two sides, and a dressing—start at $25. Options include grass-fed steak and sustainably caught salmon, paired with sides like purple miso mash and charred broccolini.
Smoothies are priced around $16 and include popular selections such as the ‘Bondi Breakfast’ and ‘Common Gains’. For those seeking trendy beverages, the menu features items like Maple Sea Salt Lattes and Mushroom Cacao. Hill mentioned that the Common Steak Plate has been particularly well-received, with customers raving about the miso purple mash.
The store also offers ready-to-go options, including green juices and breakfast items like chia pots and yogurt parfaits. Customers can choose to enjoy their meals in the store, which features a lively soundtrack, or take their orders to the nearby beach.
Customer Reactions and Social Media Buzz
Initial reviews from customers have been overwhelmingly positive. One patron praised the smoothies, comparing them to those from Erewhon. Another shared a takeaway order totaling $120, acknowledging the high prices but expressing a desire to return for the dining experience.
Content creator Brittany Daisy remarked that Common Supply is “exactly what Bondi needed,” highlighting the quality of her matcha and the deliciousness of the $28 steak plate. Early patrons have dubbed the venue an Instagrammer’s paradise, solidifying its status as a trendy hotspot mere days after opening.
This is not the first time Australian venues have drawn comparisons to Erewhon. Earlier in 2024, Perth’s Boatshed Market was labeled the “Erewhon of Australia,” with customers praising its upscale offerings and variety. Co-owner Craig Skead noted that his experiences at the LA store were instrumental in shaping the concept for his own market.
As Common Supply continues to attract attention, it remains to be seen if it can sustain its initial success in a location known for a high turnover of eateries. For now, it stands at the forefront of Bondi’s health food scene, appealing to fitness enthusiasts and food lovers alike.
