West Australians demonstrated remarkable generosity during Telethon 2025, raising a record-breaking total of $90.16 million. This sum represents the highest amount raised in the event’s history, showcasing an outpouring of community support that exceeded all previous fundraising efforts.
The Telethon event, held over the weekend, saw significant contributions from both local and interstate donors. More than 15 donations exceeded $10,000, with the largest contributions reaching $30,000 each. Notably, donations came from as far afield as Hong Kong, Lithuania, and India, underscoring the event’s expansive reach. For the first time, viewers outside of Western Australia were able to watch the 26-hour broadcast live on 7flix or stream it on 7plus, contributing to a record number of donations from outside the state.
Celebrity involvement played a significant role in the fundraising efforts. The call centre experienced a notable surge in donations during appearances by stars such as Ronan Keating and Ben Cousins. Many donors expressed heartfelt gratitude, including a former patient at the Perth Children’s Hospital, who shared a touching message of appreciation for the medical staff that supported their recovery.
Telethon’s Impact and Community Spirit
The Telethon broadcast reached an impressive 1.242 million viewers nationally, with the finale attracting a total TV audience of 246,000, marking a 37 percent increase from the previous year. The audience on 7plus also soared, increasing by 111 percent year-on-year. Overall, the total TV audience grew by 24 percent compared to last year.
Richard Goyder, the chairman of Telethon, described this year’s event as the “best ever.” He noted an encouraging trend, stating that donations had increased over the past two years, signifying a growing trust in how funds are utilized. Goyder emphasized the importance of community involvement, mentioning that individuals approached him with bags of cash to donate directly.
“This sense of community is vital. People are coming together to support local children and families,” Goyder said. He highlighted a memorable moment from the weekend when Jordan Blair, a Little Telethon Star, performed a rendition of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” captivating the audience.
A Legacy of Giving
The event’s success was not only reflected in the financial contributions but also in the community spirit it fostered. Kerry Stokes, chair of Seven West Media and Telethon trustee, stated, “Telethon is more than a fundraiser. It’s a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we come together.”
Maryna Fewster, chief executive of Seven West Media WA and also a trustee, echoed this sentiment, remarking on the event’s role in cultivating a sense of unity. The Western Australia Premier, Roger Cook, praised the collective efforts of the community, stating, “There are 90 million reasons why I am Australia’s proudest Premier today.” He acknowledged the ongoing reputation of Western Australia as a generous state, driven by everyday citizens willing to contribute.
As Telethon 2025 concluded, there was an optimistic outlook for the future. While there are no expectations to surpass this year’s extraordinary total, Goyder noted, “You don’t bet against the Western Australian community.” The support from government, corporations, and philanthropists suggests that next year’s Telethon could be equally remarkable.
The event remains a key part of Western Australia’s identity, illustrating the profound impact of community-driven initiatives on the lives of children and families in need.
