Daniil Medvedev has officially ended his long-term coaching relationship with Gilles Cervara following a disappointing performance in the 2025 Grand Slam season. The split comes after Medvedev suffered a shocking first-round defeat at the US Open, marking a significant downturn for the player who was the champion at Flushing Meadows in 2021.
Both Medvedev and Cervara took to Instagram on Sunday to express their gratitude for their partnership, which spanned approximately eight to ten years. Medvedev highlighted the success they achieved together, including reaching the pinnacle of the ATP rankings. In his post, he acknowledged Cervara’s guidance over the years, stating, “I am grateful to you for guiding me through all these years and let’s see what life brings us in the future.”
This season has been particularly challenging for Medvedev. Following his prestigious win in 2021, he has dropped to No. 13 in the ATP rankings. His struggles have been evident, as he has failed to advance past the first round in the last three major tournaments, including two losses to French player Benjamin Bonzi.
During his recent match against Bonzi at the US Open, Medvedev expressed his frustration vocally when a photographer disrupted play by coming onto the court. This led to a heated confrontation with the chair umpire, who allowed Bonzi to take another first serve. As a result, Medvedev received fines for both unsportsmanlike conduct and racquet abuse, further emphasizing the turmoil he has faced in recent months.
Cervara shared his sentiments regarding their collaboration, noting, “I loved coaching and supporting Medvedev (even when it was difficult), and finding solutions with you and the team to help you perform.” He expressed confidence in Medvedev’s potential, stating, “I will keep in mind your unconventional magic as a player, which is your strength. It will return, I’m sure.”
As Medvedev looks to regroup following this significant coaching change, the tennis world will be watching closely to see how this decision impacts his future performance on the court. The upcoming months will be crucial for the former world No. 1 as he seeks to regain his form and make a strong comeback in the competitive landscape of men’s tennis.
