After a remarkable season with the Brisbane Broncos, Kotoni Staggs is setting his sights on securing a spot in the New South Wales Blues rugby league team. Staggs recently reflected on his achievements while participating in the Queensland PGA Championships pro-am in Brisbane, where he reunited with former Broncos coach Kevin Walters.
Staggs played a pivotal role in the Australian national team’s success, contributing to all three victories during the Kangaroos’ Test series in England. “I haven’t really sat down and looked back yet, but it’s been one hell of a year and that’s why you play footy,” the 27-year-old stated. “It’s been amazing playing footy in Brisbane, where everybody loves the Broncos and us winning… you walk around and everyone’s congratulating you wherever you go.”
Reflecting on a Successful Year
As he savors the afterglow of a successful campaign, Staggs recalls his childhood ambition to play in the National Rugby League (NRL) and win a premiership. “As a kid that’s what you want to do… make the NRL and win a premiership,” he said. Yet, despite his success, there remains one goal that Staggs is eager to achieve.
“Every year I set goals to achieve and that’s one… I want to have that Blues jersey and have it for a while,” he remarked, expressing his desire to represent New South Wales in future matches. Staggs made his debut for the Blues in the 2022 season opener, but his first appearance was cut short due to a shoulder injury that ultimately required off-season surgery.
Opportunity Awaits
Looking ahead to the next season, Staggs is aware that the departure of Zac Lomax, who has been a key player in the Blues’ backline, could present him with an opportunity. Lomax has recently been released from his NRL contract to pursue other opportunities, potentially opening the door for Staggs to claim a place in the team.
“I’ve just got to keep playing good footy and time will tell, but that’ll be one thing on my mind, to try to get that Blues jersey,” Staggs added, underlining his determination to continue performing at a high level.
As the upcoming season approaches, Staggs remains focused on maintaining his impressive form, aiming to solidify his place in the Blues lineup and continue his journey in the NRL.
