Three promising young players with ties to Melbourne’s north-west were selected during the second night of the AFL draft, highlighting their potential to make an impact in professional Australian football.
Finn Davis, a defender from the Western Jets, was picked by Greater Western Sydney at pick 51. Despite missing games early in the season, he finished second in the Jets’ best and fairest award, showcasing his resilience and skill. Over the season, Davis averaged nearly 28 disposals and six marks per game, earning praise for his consistency as a medium defender.
Jets coach Christian Stagliano commented on Davis’s journey, noting, “It was exciting for Finn to be a train on for the metro squad and worked his way into the main squad which was super.” He added that Davis had delivered consistently strong performances, further establishing his reputation in the Coates Talent League.
Adrian Caruso, head of talent for the Giants, emphasized Davis’s calm demeanor and ball-handling skills. “What we like most about Finn was his ability to get a job done when asked of him, but also show creativity and ball use when used as a set up player,” Caruso noted. Davis joins a growing group of young defenders at the Giants, including James Leake, Joe Fonti, and Harry Oliver.
Another notable selection was Hussein El Achkar, chosen by Essendon at pick 53. As a product of the Bombers’ Next Generation Academy, El Achkar’s selection came after Essendon matched a bid from Richmond. He is recognized for his electrifying playing style, having scored 47 goals in 26 appearances for the Calder Cannons, a performance that included a remarkable six-goal match against Sandringham this season.
El Achkar also impressed during his time with Vic Metro, where he netted three goals against the Allies. Following a successful debut with Essendon’s VFL team, he made a significant contribution by scoring three goals after half-time in a crucial match. His dynamic presence on the field is anticipated to add excitement to the Bombers’ lineup.
Former Western Jets captain Billy Cootee was another unexpected selection, picked by Sydney at pick 42. Cootee, who has a background at Maribyrnong Sports Academy, previously played for Essendon’s VFL side, where he served as captain. He later took his talents to Norwood in South Australia, where he demonstrated his work ethic and deep understanding of the game.
Known for his versatility, Cootee has the ability to play as a high forward or in the midfield. His consistent performances in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) culminated in a fifth-place finish in the prestigious Magarey Medal standings, further underlining his potential in the AFL.
The selections of Davis, El Achkar, and Cootee highlight the emerging talent in Australian football, as these young athletes prepare to take their first steps into the professional arena. Each player’s journey reflects both their individual skills and the strong development programs in place at their respective clubs.
