Wellington Phoenix achieved a resounding victory over Newcastle Jets, winning 5-1 in challenging weather conditions at No.2 Sportsground on March 10, 2024. The match, which marked the Phoenix’s first A-League Women win in Newcastle, was interrupted by severe thunder and lightning, leading to its suspension with just two minutes remaining in regulation time.
The Phoenix showcased their dominance from the outset, scoring early through teenage star Pia Vlok, who netted two goals within the first 15 minutes. In the 10th minute, Vlok struck unchallenged from the edge of the penalty area, setting the tone for a commanding performance. The Jets struggled to adapt, and by the 23rd minute, the scoreline had ballooned to 4-0, thanks to goals from Emma Pijnenburg and Ellie Walker.
Phoenix fired off an impressive 12 shots in the first half, while the Jets managed only three. Pijnenburg extended the lead with a free shot from outside the box in the 20th minute. Walker added to the tally just three minutes later, flicking the ball in from close range following a corner kick. The Jets faced an uphill battle as they entered halftime with a substantial deficit.
As the second half commenced, the Jets appeared more invigorated, attempting to leverage the strong wind to their advantage. However, Vlok quickly dashed their hopes by scoring her third goal in the 64th minute, becoming the second-youngest player in A-League Women history to achieve a hat-trick. This moment came shortly after Victoria Esson, Phoenix’s goalkeeper, made crucial saves to deny Newcastle’s Alexis Collins and Josie Allan.
Despite a spirited effort from the Jets, who saw Melina Ayres finally find the net in the 73rd minute with a rebound, the damage had already been inflicted. The Jets’ defense struggled throughout the match, particularly in light of the absence of injured goalkeeper Anna Leat. In her place, Georgia Ritchie, just 17 years old, made her A-League debut amid the chaos.
Coach Stephen Hoyle made five changes to his starting lineup from the previous match, which ended in a 2-1 loss against Adelaide. New additions included forwards Ayres and Josie Allan, along with defender Josie Wilson. While the Jets now sit on 16 points in the league, they remain only four points above the bottom of the table, with their next challenge coming against Melbourne Victory away next Saturday.
The match not only showcased the Phoenix’s attacking prowess but also highlighted the Jets’ defensive vulnerabilities, prompting questions about their strategy moving forward in the league. With eight games remaining, Wellington Phoenix is now in a strong position, currently sitting second in the league standings.
