Cyient Semiconductors has been awarded a significant contract to supply and qualify technology intellectual properties for the modernization of the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali, India. This initiative, valued at approximately ₹4,500 crore, aligns with the Government of India’s ambitions under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), which aims to enhance domestic semiconductor capabilities and reduce reliance on imports.
The modernization project is designed to create accessible fabrication capacity for startups, academic institutions, and strategic sectors. As part of this effort, Cyient Semiconductors will update crucial process technology platforms that are essential to the upgraded facility. The company will provide three foundational process technologies: RF-CMOS, BCD (HV LDMOS), and CMOS Image Sensor (CIS), which will support SCL’s enhanced 8-inch manufacturing line. These technologies are critical across various domains including industrial, automotive, energy, sensing, and connectivity.
Contributing to India’s Semiconductor Goals
“This qualification for such a strategic project is a proud moment for Cyient Semiconductors and a validation of our engineering expertise and execution capabilities,” stated Krishna Bodanapu, Executive Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Cyient Limited. He emphasized that the collaboration with SCL is intended to accelerate India’s path toward semiconductor self-reliance, delivering high-value silicon solutions that meet growing global demand.
The project represents a crucial milestone in Cyient Semiconductors’ ambition to become India’s leading turnkey Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) provider, overseeing the complete chip lifecycle from specification to production. Suman Narayan, CEO of Cyient Semiconductors, highlighted the company’s expertise in RF-CMOS, BCD, and CIS technologies, viewing this contract as both a responsibility and an opportunity to enhance India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
Future Applications and Strategic Focus
The initiative not only underscores Cyient Semiconductors’ commitment to high-growth segments but also broadens the potential applications of the updated technology platforms. Future applications could encompass smart energy solutions, automotive electronics, industrial control systems, imaging and sensing technologies, and low-power wireless or IoT devices. The enhanced mature-node process is expected to serve these applications effectively over time.
Founded in Hyderabad, Cyient Semiconductors specializes in custom ASIC and Application-Specific Standard Product (ASSP) solutions, focusing on analog mixed-signal technologies and intelligent power platforms. With design centers located in India, Belgium, and the United States, Cyient empowers clients in data centers, robotics, automotive, and industrial automation to achieve greater efficiency and faster time-to-market.
The modernization of the SCL is a critical step in bolstering India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, which are becoming increasingly vital to the nation’s technological future.
