Armidale High School Reunion Sparks Joyful Memories 55 Years On

UPDATE: Over 50 classmates of Armidale High School gathered on November 15, 2023, for an emotional reunion, celebrating 55 years since their graduation in 1970. The event took place at the Armidale Bowling Club, where cherished memories were revived amidst laughter and nostalgia.

Organizers, including Margaret Adams, Barbara Sauer, and Christine Martin, invested nearly six months planning this reunion, marking a significant moment for those who hadn’t seen each other in years. “Some attendees traveled from as far as Hervey Bay, Sydney, and Brisbane,” they noted, reflecting on the joy of reconnecting.

Although many participants are now in their 70s and faced health challenges or family commitments, the event drew 54 classmates and about 20 partners, creating a vibrant atmosphere of shared experiences.

Attendees reminisced about their high school days, recalling the unforgettable moments such as the school’s first-grade rugby league team reaching the finals of the University Shield. “Five buses loaded with the cheer squad set out, but one broke down in Uralla,” the organizers recalled with a chuckle. “We arrived just as the team was taking the field, exhausted but excited.”

Memories of friendly rivalries with Tamworth and Inverell High Schools during athletics and swimming competitions also surfaced, highlighting the spirited environment at Armidale High. The school’s strong academic standards, bolstered by a community rich in educators and professionals, contributed to a formative educational experience for the students.

This reunion also commemorated the 50th anniversary of Armidale High School’s opening in 1969, a milestone celebrated with a grand ball and various events that drew alumni from decades past. The organizing committee emphasized the importance of acknowledging classmates who have passed, ensuring their memories remain alive in the hearts of those who attended.

Celebrations included cutting a special cake, with Phillip Batty and Nanda Fraser chosen at random for the honor. The festivities continued with informal gatherings and breakfasts, allowing classmates to reconnect and share their journeys since graduation.

The heartfelt reunion serves as a reminder of the lasting bonds formed during formative years and the importance of community ties as they reflect on their shared past. With plans for future gatherings already in discussion, the class of 1970 looks forward to keeping their legacy alive, ensuring that the spirit of Armidale High School endures for generations to come.
