URGENT UPDATE: The Australian Western Showcase has officially kicked off in Tatura, bringing a weekend packed with thrilling western-style horse competitions from December 4-7, 2023. This event is drawing riders, horses, and equestrian enthusiasts together for a unique experience that celebrates skill, camaraderie, and competitive spirit.
Competitors are showcasing the impressive partnership between horse and rider, emphasizing tradition and practical horsemanship. Judge Craig Rath, who has over 16 years of judging experience, is leading the evaluations, focusing on both performance and real-world capability. “You look for a cowie-type horse who is consistent in its movement, something that if we were to take it out on to a ranch, it would be able to go all day,” he stated.
The excitement is palpable as participants and spectators alike witness the skillful displays in various classes, highlighting the dedication and hard work that goes into these performances. Behind the scenes, Harry van Dyk, president of the Australian Western Showcase, shared the extensive efforts needed to bring this event to life. “Basically, we work with a bunch of people to put the program together, get the sponsorship done, book the venue and make sure they’ve got prizes,” he explained.
This showcase marks a significant milestone as the organization’s first major show after a year of meticulous planning. The positive feedback from both participants and spectators has been overwhelming, with many praising the venue and the event’s inclusivity.
Competitor Lynne van Dyk, who is participating in the Select Amateur Ranch Riding class, emphasized the event’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, “We’re the only horse breed that actually promote and encourage our older riders.” She highlighted how these events motivate participants to maintain fitness, confidence, and a strong connection with the equestrian community.
The Australian Western Showcase is not just a competition; it symbolizes the growing significance of western-style horse disciplines in Australian rural life. It successfully blends practical horsemanship, competitive spirit, and community engagement, making it a must-see event for horse lovers and enthusiasts.
As the weekend progresses, all eyes will be on Tatura as competitors vie for top honors and spectators cheer on their favorites. Don’t miss the chance to witness this vibrant celebration of equestrian talent and community spirit!
