UPDATE: Grand United has kept its unbeaten streak alive in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association (VTCA) T20 competition, dominating Newport-Digman in a crucial catch-up match last night. The Gorillas set a solid target with 8-104 before bowling out the Bulls for 92, securing a significant victory that emphasizes their strong start to the season.
The match took place on December 12, following the postponement of the opening round. Grand United showcased their batting depth, with Kyle Welsh leading the charge, scoring 35, while Leo Turnbull-Gent added a valuable 28 down the order. The Gorillas’ bowlers were equally impressive, as Josh Kingston and Shakille Elhouli each claimed two wickets, dismantling the Bulls’ batting lineup.
Newport-Digman initially appeared to be in a strong position at 4-74, but a dramatic collapse saw them lose their last six wickets for just 18 runs. Charlie O’Dea top-scored for the Bulls with 30 before being run out, leaving the team frustrated and short of their target.
With this victory, Grand United joins Deer Park at the top of the standings, both teams boasting three wins in the early rounds of the tournament. In another fixture, Keilor fell short against Oak Park St Francis in group A3. The Saints posted a competitive 7-157, thanks to a standout performance from Richard Clarke, who scored 60. Despite a promising start at 1-66, Keilor struggled and eventually succumbed to a final score of 135, losing their last seven wickets for a mere 20 runs, with Harry Warrick top-scoring with 42.
As the tournament progresses, the competition intensifies. After three rounds, Westmeadows and Footscray United also sit with two wins each, while three other teams remain with one victory. In group B1, East Keilor showcased their prowess against Pascoe Vale Hadfield, solidifying their position.
Upcoming matches include important catch-up games scheduled for Tuesday, with the next round set to kick off on December 16. Fans are eager to see if Grand United can maintain their momentum and secure continued success in this exciting T20 season.
