Hume Council Votes to Maintain Arterial Road Median Strips

UPDATE: Hume Council has just announced a pivotal decision to take on the maintenance of median strips along arterial roads, breaking a deadlock with a 5-5 vote at the council meeting on August 11, 2023. The mayor’s casting vote propelled the proposal forward, marking a significant shift in responsibility for road upkeep.

The councilors were initially divided on whether the maintenance of these critical areas should fall under the jurisdiction of the state-managed Department of Transport and Planning (DTP). The original motion, which sought to affirm DTP’s responsibility, was ultimately defeated, highlighting the urgent need for action in the face of deteriorating road conditions.

Cr Daniel English voiced strong concerns over the state government’s reduced maintenance efforts, emphasizing that ratepayers should not bear the burden of maintaining overgrown grass and other safety hazards. “What we see on our arterial roads is a visual sign of state government neglect,” he stated. “This neglect hurts our image, our community pride, and even our road safety.”

With only ten councilors present, the mayor’s critical vote tilted the balance in favor of a minor maintenance agreement with DTP, allowing the council to assume responsibility for maintaining arterial roads starting in 2026-2027. Cr Kate Hamley, who proposed the agreement, stressed the growing number of complaints from residents regarding the state of the roads. “DTP’s maintenance schedule has decreased from six cuts per year to only three, leading to knee-high grass and obstructed visibility,” she explained.

The council’s decision comes in response to widespread frustration among residents about the increasing neglect of their streets, with visible signs of deterioration and litter now commonplace. Cr Hamley noted, “Whatever advocacy we do regarding funding seems to fall on deaf ears.”

As the situation develops, the council’s new approach aims to enhance the safety and aesthetic appeal of Hume’s arterial roads, which are vital for community pride and road safety. Residents and stakeholders will be closely monitoring the implementation of this agreement.

DTP has been contacted for comment but has yet to respond. As this story unfolds, residents are encouraged to share their thoughts and experiences with local government officials, emphasizing the importance of clean and safe streets in the community.

Stay tuned for further updates on this significant local issue as Hume Council takes steps to improve its arterial roads.
