Kempsey Woman Jailed for Assaulting Police, Sentenced to 12 Months

BREAKING NEWS: A Kempsey woman has been sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment following a violent encounter with police, highlighting serious concerns over public safety. Rachel Reid, aged 36, was convicted after resisting arrest and assaulting officers during an altercation on the evening of October 9, 2025.

In a tense situation, police responded to reports of a disturbance involving Reid and another woman. Upon arrival, officers found Reid screaming at two police personnel. Fearing for their safety and the possibility of further violence, law enforcement attempted to arrest her to maintain peace. Reid resisted arrest, leading to a physical confrontation where one officer suffered redness to their elbow.

Reid appeared before Kempsey Local Court, where she received a non-parole period of five months, resulting in a total sentence of 12 months. Magistrate Georgina Crofts addressed Reid’s history of violence, stating, “Your record does not assist you as you have a long history of violence, and you need to take accountability.”

This incident marks Reid’s second conviction, which contributed to the court’s emphasis on deterrence. Despite her solicitor presenting a letter detailing Reid’s emotional state during the incident, the magistrate underscored the need for significant consequences to prevent future offenses.

Reid has been in custody since the assault, having already served 49 days. She is now eligible for parole in March 2026, but the implications of her actions resonate beyond her personal circumstances, raising questions about community safety and police interactions.

As this story develops, the community and officials alike are reminded of the critical importance of maintaining public order and the consequences of violent behavior. Keep following for more updates on this unfolding situation.
