URGENT UPDATE: Local author Mrs. Strange has just released her debut book, Gigi’s Butterfly Garden, a vital tool for educating children about the endangered Cairns Birdwing butterfly and the importance of conservation. The book, which launched on November 16, 2025, is set to inspire families and schools to take immediate action in preserving local ecosystems.
In an emotional reflection, Mrs. Strange revealed, “I’ve spent hours outside watching and photographing the whole process. From the egg to the caterpillar, to the chrysalis and finally the butterfly, it’s such a quick and beautiful transformation.” The book is filled with stunning illustrations and is aimed at older children and young teens, aiming to instill a sense of environmental responsibility.
The narrative centers around the critical relationship between the Cairns Birdwing and its native food source, the vine Aristolochia tagala. “If the female butterfly lays her eggs on the wrong vine, Aristolochia elegans, the caterpillars die,” Mrs. Strange explained. This makes it imperative for gardeners and homeowners to plant native species to ensure the survival of these butterflies.
Mrs. Strange’s passion for conservation extends beyond her book. She has previously collaborated with the Cairns Regional Council and the Yorkeys Knob Residents Association to create educational signage about local wildlife, demonstrating her commitment to preserving Cairns’ natural habitats.
“I hope my book will encourage people to plant native vines and protect our green spaces,” she asserted. “If we keep removing trees and green areas, where will these creatures go? We need to plant natives, flowers, and vines that invite our local insects and wildlife to stay.”
As the book becomes available online and at local stores, including Cairns Books in Cairns Central, Mrs. Strange emphasizes the urgency of her message: “Even green ants and stingless bees play a part in our ecosystem.”
This heartfelt project is self-funded, and Mrs. Strange believes it is worth every cent if it raises awareness and helps children connect with nature. For those interested in supporting butterfly conservation, Gigi’s Butterfly Garden is now available for order at www.bit.ly/49dxjtC.
As we face growing environmental challenges, Mrs. Strange’s book isn’t just a story—it’s a call to action for the future of our local wildlife.
