URGENT UPDATE: A massive cannabis operation has been dismantled in Melbourne, with police seizing an estimated $15 million worth of cannabis plants. Authorities executed search warrants at a residence in Keysborough and an eight-hectare property in Devon Meadows on August 29, 2023, leading to the arrest of eight suspects.
As police arrived, officers pursued the suspects who attempted to flee the scene. All eight were apprehended, with five men aged between 26 and 49 charged with multiple offenses, including the cultivation of a large commercial quantity of cannabis. They appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on August 30 and have been remanded to reappear at a later date.
“This investigation highlights the sophisticated measures alleged offenders use to conceal illegal drug activity,” said Sergeant Josh Gordon. He emphasized the significance of the seizure, stating, “This is a significant seizure of cannabis, preventing millions upon millions of dollars’ worth from hitting the streets.”
Police spent two days meticulously searching the expansive property, uncovering a sophisticated setup that included various gardening igloos designed to cultivate the illicit crop. A total of 4,500 plants of varying maturity levels were removed, each contributing to the staggering estimated street value of $15 million. Following forensic examination by a botanist, the plants are set to be destroyed.
In addition to the cannabis, officers seized a firearm, along with quantities of amphetamines, cocaine, ammunition, and cash from the property. Three men aged 32, 37, and 41 were released with intent to summons for cultivating a large commercial quantity of cannabis. A man and woman, both aged 33, were also questioned and released pending further inquiries.
Authorities anticipate additional charges as the investigation progresses. This bust not only disrupts a significant drug operation but also underscores the ongoing battle against illegal drug activity in Victoria. As police continue their work, more updates are expected in the coming days. Stay tuned for the latest developments on this critical situation.
