URGENT UPDATE: Lesley Edward Smith, a 35-year-old man from Sinclair, has just pleaded guilty in the Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court to multiple charges of possessing child exploitation material and threatening his partner with a hunting knife in front of children. This shocking case has raised serious concerns about community safety as Smith has been released on bail following his court appearance on December 7, 2023.
Smith admitted to possessing numerous sexual photos and videos of young girls, including explicit content involving minors both over and under the age of 13. Disturbingly, one video was reported to involve an animal. During the court proceedings, he also confessed to the alarming act of threatening his partner with a hunting knife in front of their children, raising grave concerns about the safety of those involved.
The prosecution did not oppose Smith’s bail application, which was made by his lawyer. Magistrate Paul Lyons highlighted that Smith does not have any serious past convictions, contributing to the decision to grant bail. Smith participated in the hearing via video link from the Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison and requested clarification on his bail conditions, admitting he was not the “sharpest knife in the drawer.”
Bail conditions have been imposed, including a requirement that Smith reside at a specific address in Norseman. He is prohibited from having unsupervised contact with children under 16, must refrain from using the internet except for essential activities like banking or legal advice, and is banned from alcohol consumption. Additionally, he has been placed under a $2,000 personal undertaking.
The charges related to child exploitation material will proceed to the district court, while the remaining charges will be addressed in the Esperance Magistrates Court next month.
