Police Blitz Nabs 230 Repeat Family Violence Offenders

UPDATE: A major police operation in Victoria has led to the arrest of 230 repeat offenders linked to family violence in a focused blitz throughout September and October 2023. The crackdown targeted recidivist perpetrators in the north-west metro region, underscoring a commitment to combat ongoing family violence.

Authorities from the Westgate Family Violence Investigation Unit and Broadmeadows Family Violence Investigation Unit collaborated in this urgent initiative, which included the Family Violence Command Taskforce and the Public Order Response Team. These law enforcement teams tracked down individuals wanted for multiple violent crimes against current and former partners, as well as children.

Police reported that among those arrested was a 42-year-old man who failed to appear in court for serious family violence offenses, a 35-year-old man accused of family violence-related aggravated burglary, and a 42-year-old woman who allegedly assaulted another woman at a shopping center. Additionally, an 18-year-old man involved in multiple counts of deception and property damage was apprehended.

In total, police issued 187 family violence intervention orders and executed over 120 outstanding warrants. Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Fiona Waters emphasized the seriousness of the operation: “Family violence is completely unacceptable – we will continue to work tirelessly to target and apprehend offenders and keep victims safe.”

The blitz focused specifically on repeat offenders who have a history of violent behavior over a 12-month period. This proactive approach aims to disrupt established patterns of violence while engaging specialist support services.

Detective Sergeant Chris Couacaud from the Broadmeadows Family Violence Investigation Unit warned perpetrators: “Those that choose to engage in this behavior should think again. They will be tracked down by police and held to account.”

Victims and concerned individuals are encouraged to seek help. The Men’s Referral Service by No to Violence offers support for men who exhibit violent behavior at 1300 766 491. Additionally, Safe Steps is available 24/7 at 1800 015 188 or via email at [email protected]. In emergencies, calling triple-0 is essential.

This significant police operation highlights the urgent need for community awareness and intervention in family violence cases. With these arrests, authorities are sending a clear message: perpetrators will be held accountable, and victim safety remains a top priority.
