URGENT UPDATE: Two men were fined a total of $2,200 each for violating strict fire ban regulations as the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) intensifies enforcement amid extreme fire danger. The fines were issued on Wednesday, November 26, 2023, in the MIA district, where fire danger ratings soared to catastrophic levels.
The RFS reported that the fire danger rating across the Riverina was assessed as “extreme” on November 27, with total fire bans in effect across northern, southern, and eastern fire districts. These bans are crucial for safeguarding communities and firefighters against the devastating impacts of fire.
In a significant breach, a Bilbul man was caught lighting a pile burn around 9:00 AM on November 26, resulting in a hefty $2,200 fine. Authorities noted that he also failed to apply for a fire permit during the bushfire danger period, potentially escalating his penalties by another $1,100.
Moreover, a Leeton man faced the same $2,200 fine for operating an angle grinder without the required exemption and lacking firefighting equipment nearby. RFS district manager Scott Connor emphasized the seriousness of these violations, stating,
“Total fire ban days are declared to protect our communities and firefighters from the devastating impacts of fire. Non-compliance puts lives, homes, and livelihoods at risk, and enforcement action will be taken where necessary.”
The RFS has made it clear that these fines serve as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with extreme fire conditions. On the same day of the infractions, a fast-moving grass fire northwest of The Rock escalated to emergency warning status, underscoring the urgency of adhering to fire bans.
As the fire season intensifies, residents are urged to remain vigilant and comply with all fire restrictions. The RFS continues to monitor the situation closely, and further enforcement actions may follow if violations persist.
Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops, and remember, following fire safety regulations is essential for protecting lives and property.
