UPDATE: Construction crews will begin transforming Bendigo’s Barnard Street into a construction zone while the world tunes in to the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The state government has just announced that local firm Searle Bros has been appointed as the head contractor for this significant upgrade, which is expected to be completed by late next year.
As athletes prepare for the games set to kick off in late July, Bendigo will focus on enhancing its sports infrastructure. The project will include the demolition of existing bowls and croquet greens, paving the way for four refurbished bowling greens, two croquet lawns, and critical accessibility improvements. This urgent development comes amid escalating costs that led to the cancellation of Bendigo’s original plans to host events for the Commonwealth Games.
This construction initiative aligns with the Victorian government’s commitment to invest in venues that missed out on hosting game competitions. Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence emphasized the importance of this investment, highlighting how it will provide vital sporting infrastructure to the City of Greater Bendigo and surrounding areas.
“We’re excited to have a Bendigo-based contractor with experience on similar projects,” Spence stated. She believes that the upgrades will significantly enhance local sports participation and bring communities together.
In Glasgow, organizers are actively preparing for their games, having recently launched a £250,000 ($AUS500,000) “festival fund” aimed at creating events that unite people during the games.
“With £250,000 available in small grants, we’re welcoming applications from all corners of the city,”
said Baillie Annette Christie, chair of Glasgow Life. This initiative showcases Glasgow’s dedication to delivering community-focused festivals, enhancing the overall experience during major events.
Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards expressed optimism that the upgrades would provide the “high-quality facilities” that local communities deserve. She underlined that these improvements would support more local events right in Bendigo. Jacinta Allan, Premier of Victoria and Bendigo East MP, echoed this sentiment, noting that the project will create more jobs and opportunities for local clubs and players.
As construction progresses, residents of Bendigo can look forward to a rejuvenated sports hub that promises to foster local sporting talent and community well-being. Other Commonwealth Games replacement projects around Bendigo include major upgrades at the Bendigo Showgrounds, contributing to the region’s commitment to sports development.
Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting transformation unfolds in Bendigo while the world watches the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
