UPDATE: Authorities have raided a property in Drouin, Gippsland, linked to an alleged firewood theft operation. The raid, executed on August 7, 2025, comes after reports of illegal timber cutting in the Tarnagulla State Forest on May 29, 2025.
The Conservation Regulator Victoria confirmed that several men were caught illegally felling a significant number of Ironbark trees, which are crucial habitats for threatened species like the Swift Parrot. These trees were reportedly harvested to be sold on the black market for firewood, threatening local ecosystems and biodiversity.
During the operation, authorities seized a white Nissan tipper truck and a mobile phone. The investigation is ongoing, with officials committed to pursuing those involved in this illegal trade.
Brady Childs, manager of Taskforce Ironbark, emphasized the seriousness of the crime, stating, “This investigation demonstrates the reach and effectiveness of Taskforce Ironbark in tackling organised firewood crime across the state.” He added, “We’re committed to protecting Victoria’s parks and forests and holding black market firewood operators accountable for the damage they do to our environment – no matter how far they try to run.”
Community members are urged to report any suspicious firewood activities by calling 136 186. Reports can be made anonymously, highlighting the public’s role in combating environmental crimes.
This urgent investigation underscores the growing concern over illegal logging activities that threaten Victoria’s natural resources. As the environmental impact looms, authorities are on high alert to address these unlawful operations.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as officials continue to crack down on firewood theft and protect the integrity of Victoria’s forests.
