UPDATE: Umina Fire Station is undergoing critical upgrades to enhance the safety and efficiency of its operations, as confirmed by Member for Gosford Liesl Tesch and Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib during their visit earlier today, October 10, 2023. This refurbishment will significantly improve facilities for the station’s 36 firefighters, ensuring they are better equipped to serve the Central Coast community.
The upgrades are part of the Clean Fire Station Program by Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW), which aims to reduce exposure to contaminated materials from fire scenes. Renovations will include new rest areas, separated work and living spaces, upgraded storage, and modern shower and locker facilities for both male and female firefighters. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year, providing a much-needed boost to local emergency services.
Additionally, Gosford crews are set to receive a new $900,000 Rescue Pumper, designed with firefighter input to enhance operational capabilities. This state-of-the-art truck will improve response times and streamline access to essential tools, enabling faster and more effective emergency responses in the region.
The NSW Government is investing an additional $17 million over the next two years to renew the firefighting fleet, which will deliver over 15 new fire trucks to replace aging vehicles. This funding is part of a larger $98.7 million capital program aimed at upgrading fire stations across the state.
Minister Dib emphasized the importance of these upgrades: “The refurbishment at Umina will bring the station in line with modern standards and ensure a safe, clean work environment for firefighters. Gosford’s new fire truck will enhance response times for Central Coast communities for years to come.”
Tesch highlighted the significance of expanding emergency services as the region’s population grows. “Our local firefighters serve our community every day, putting themselves in harm’s way to protect us. The refurbishments at Umina are significant and will be very much welcomed by Central Coast communities.”
FRNSW Acting Commissioner Paul McGuiggan stated that the upgrades are designed to meet the specific needs of firefighters, ensuring preparedness for any situation. “These enhancements will ensure we’re ready for anything here on the Central Coast,” he said.
This major refurbishment and the introduction of advanced firefighting equipment underscore the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of local firefighters, who are on the front lines of community protection.
Residents are encouraged to stay tuned for updates as these critical improvements unfold, ensuring that local firefighting capabilities remain strong and effective in safeguarding the community.
