UPDATE: The historic Wentworth Park greyhound racing track in Sydney’s inner west will be demolished to create community sporting fields and green space for 2,500 new homes. This urgent announcement comes from NSW Premier Chris Minns today as the government partners with the City of Sydney to rezone land in the area, increasing the total new homes in the precinct to 7,300.
Located just 1.5 kilometers west of the Sydney CBD, this 3.3-hectare site has been a racing hub since 1932. The decision marks the end of over 100 years of racing history, with demolition set to begin when the greyhound lease expires in September 2027.
Premier Minns emphasized the importance of this change, stating, “We recognize Wentworth Park holds deep history and meaning for many people… But cities change, and we have a responsibility to plan for the future.” The redevelopment aligns with the government’s strategy to create urban infill and higher-density housing near public transport.
In addition to the new homes, the plan promises to deliver up to 20 new community sporting fields and enhanced public spaces, addressing the urgent need for housing while ensuring well-serviced areas are prioritized for growth. Minns noted, “This is homes and community facilities delivered together.”
The NSW government is also moving forward with the redevelopment of the old fish market site, selecting Mirvac to build 1,400 homes there. Minister for Lands and Property and Sport, Steve Kamper, highlighted the need for greater utilization and community activation in the area.
As part of the ongoing efforts to support the greyhound racing industry, the government has allocated $10 million through the greyhound capital grants program to facilitate the transition for racing to other tracks, leaving only Richmond and Potts Park as remaining venues in Sydney.
Minister for Gaming and Racing, David Harris, assured that the government is committed to maintaining a responsible and sustainable racing industry while balancing community expectations.
Residents and stakeholders are urged to stay tuned for further updates as this significant transformation unfolds, reshaping the landscape of Wentworth Park and enhancing community facilities for future generations.
