The Constable Care Foundation is set to embark on an educational tour across the Kimberley region this month, offering vital skills in first aid, mental health, and filmmaking to local students. The initiative aims to benefit primary and high school students in areas such as Fitzroy Crossing, Bayulu, Derby, and Broome, marking the organization’s first visit to the Kimberley since 2021.
During the tour, which runs from September 8 to September 23, students will engage in a variety of activities designed to enhance their understanding of essential life skills. Ian Anstee, chief executive of the Constable Care Foundation, expressed enthusiasm about returning to the region, stating, “We’re so pleased to be able to make it back up to the Kimberley to bring a whole range of programs to young people who often miss out on services readily available in Perth.”
Young children in kindergarten to Year 3 will participate in puppet shows that teach basic first aid, protective behaviors, and road safety. Meanwhile, students in Years 4-6 will experience interactive theatre sessions focused on mental health, cybersafety, and bullying prevention. High school students will have the option to join CCF’s Youth Choices incursions, which cover topics like general consent and mental health, or they can delve into filmmaking workshops to explore their creative interests.
Engaging Community Through Filmmaking
The filmmaking workshops, particularly available to secondary students in Fitzroy Crossing and Derby, will culminate in a community screening event. Students will showcase their films and participate in discussions about their work, including acting out alternative scenes. This collaborative effort aims to foster a sense of community while encouraging important ethical and critical thinking skills.
Mr. Anstee highlighted the significance of these workshops, noting, “It’s designed to give young people a voice and empower them with skills to face some of life’s biggest challenges.” He emphasized that participants would build resilience, teamwork, and empathy, which are essential for navigating complex social situations. The community screenings will further provide a platform for addressing local challenges collectively.
Children from more remote communities will also have access to these programs. During the Bayulu segment of the tour, students from Djugerari, Muludja, and Kadjina will travel to join their peers in learning about protective behaviors and online safety.
