Benedict Cumberbatch Confronts Crow Fears in New Film Scene

Benedict Cumberbatch faced an unusual challenge while filming his latest project, *The Thing with Feathers*. The acclaimed actor expressed concerns that a crow might “peck his eye out” during a particular scene where the bird was required to eat from his chest. This unexpected encounter occurred while shooting the adaptation of Max Porter’s novel, *Grief Is the Thing with Feathers*, and left Cumberbatch feeling quite “nerve-wracking.”

During an appearance on the television show *Lorraine*, Cumberbatch detailed the moment the crow was set to hop onto him. To ensure his safety, the crew placed a piece of plastic over his face. He recounted the experience, saying, “They put a bit of plastic on my face, because he had to hop on my chest and peck at some food on my chest.” His unease stemmed from the crow’s formidable presence, as he reflected, “You see them in the flesh and think, ‘Are you going to come and peck my eye out?'”

Despite his initial fears, Cumberbatch holds a deep admiration for crows, describing them as “extraordinary, magical birds” that possess remarkable intelligence. The actor’s new role requires him to portray a father grappling with the loss of his wife, a theme that resonates with his own life as a parent.

Balancing Parenthood and Acting

In his personal life, the *Sherlock* star is a father to three children—Christopher, 10, Hal, eight, and Finn, six—with his wife, Sophie Hunter. Cumberbatch shared insights into his parenting style, admitting that while he strives to maintain composure, certain “petty things” can push him to his limits. Jokingly, he noted that his family has a “long list” of things that can tip him over the edge, stating, “I tend to be someone who stays calm… and then it’s like, ‘Will you put that sock on!'”

Reflecting on how fatherhood has impacted him, Cumberbatch told *The Times* that his emotions have become increasingly sensitive since becoming a parent. He explained, “[Fatherhood made my] emotions paper thin. That’s what changes how you act when you become a father.” This newfound emotional depth allows him to connect with his characters on a profound level, saying, “You become an unfettered channel to stuff that you weren’t before.”

As *The Thing with Feathers* prepares for its release, audiences are eager to see how Cumberbatch’s personal experiences with grief and parenthood shape his portrayal in the film. His journey not only highlights the challenges of acting but also underscores the complexities of navigating emotions in both life and art.
