Prof. Guo Yike Earns Prestigious CAE Honor for Engineering Excellence

Prof. Guo Yike, a prominent figure in the field of computer science, has been elected as a Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). This recognition comes in light of his significant contributions to the Information and Electronics Engineering Division, marking a notable achievement in his academic career. The CAE serves as China’s highest institution for engineering sciences, and being elected as a member is regarded as one of the most prestigious honors in the discipline.

In his response to the election, Prof. Guo expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am deeply honored to have been elected a Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and sincerely thank those for this recognition. This distinguished accolade not only affirms my own scientific journey but also celebrates the collective efforts of my team and collaborators.” He emphasized his commitment to advancing the fields of data science and artificial intelligence, aiming to foster both interdisciplinary and international collaboration that benefits society.

Impact on HKUST and the Innovation Ecosystem

The president of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Prof. Nancy Ip, highlighted the significance of Prof. Guo’s election. She stated, “We extend our warmest congratulations to Prof. Guo on his election as a Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. His contributions to artificial intelligence, coupled with his leadership in developing Hong Kong’s first generative AI large language model, have brought tremendous momentum to HKUST and the city’s innovation and technology ecosystem.” This honor not only recognizes Prof. Guo’s scientific leadership but also serves as an inspiration for emerging talents in the field.

Prof. Guo, who joined HKUST in 2020 after a distinguished 33-year tenure at Imperial College London, has focused his research on data mining for large-scale scientific applications. His work encompasses various fields, including biology, chemistry, geophysics, healthcare, and finance. Since his appointment as Provost in December 2022, he has been active in integrating advanced technologies into the university’s curricula and has led initiatives aimed at attracting global talent.

HKUST’s leadership in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is reflected in its global rankings. The university ranks 17th worldwide and first in China for its contributions to AI. Moreover, in the 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by subject, HKUST secured 28th place globally in Computer Science and 33rd in Engineering. The 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject further positioned HKUST as a leading institution, ranking it 29th globally in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and 43rd in Engineering and Technology.

These rankings underscore HKUST’s role as a top performer in engineering and technology education, highlighting its commitment to excellence in teaching and research. Prof. Guo’s recent recognition as a Foreign Academician of the CAE adds to the university’s reputation and reflects its ongoing contributions to advancements in engineering and technology.
