The Sydney Flames secured a vital victory over the UC Capitals, triumphing 84-72 and enhancing their hopes of reaching the WNBL finals. Competing without their leading scorers, Lauren Nicholson and Unique Thompson, the Flames demonstrated resilience and skill, moving to a 6-12 record after a challenging start to the season.
In front of a home crowd at Quaycentre on March 15, 2024, the Flames established a commanding lead, even as the Capitals attempted a comeback after trailing by 19 points at halftime. Jess McDowell-White and Mikhaela Cann played pivotal roles in maintaining the Flames’ advantage, each contributing crucial points in the final moments of the match.
Flames Shine Despite Key Absences
Mid-season recruit McDowell-White led the Flames with a season-high 19 points, complemented by five rebounds and five assists. Cann also made a significant impact, scoring 13 points and securing four rebounds, while Maddy Norris contributed 16 points, marking her best performance of the season.
Coach Renae Garlepp praised her team’s effort, stating, “Today was an awesome opportunity to show what you got. The players absolutely did.” She acknowledged the Capitals’ ability to fight back but emphasized her team’s composure during critical moments. “We made our own luck. We hit a lot of threes going into the half,” Garlepp added.
The Capitals, now with a record of 7-9, missed a crucial opportunity to climb into the top four, sitting just one win above the fourth-placed Southside Melbourne Flyers. Despite missing key players such as Jade Melbourne, Sara Blicavs, and Tahlia Tupaea, Canberra’s Nyadiew Puoch shone brightly with 24 points and eight rebounds, supported by Nicole Munger’s season-high 16 points.
Game Dynamics and Key Moments
The match commenced with both teams struggling to find their rhythm, resulting in multiple turnovers and missed chances. The Flames broke the deadlock with a strong 10-1 run, taking an eight-point lead by the end of the first quarter. Canberra responded with a brief surge, narrowing the gap to just two points early in the second quarter.
However, Sydney’s McDowell-White and Froling elevated their game, extending the lead to 53-34 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Capitals regrouped, with Zitina Aokuso and Puoch leading a push that brought the deficit down to single digits midway through the final quarter. Despite this pressure, the Flames held firm to secure the victory.
Coach Paul Goriss expressed disappointment at the Capitals’ start, which he felt set the tone for the game. He noted the team’s improved physicality in the second half but highlighted the implications of the free-throw disparity, with the Flames taking 18 free throws by halftime and finishing with 33. “It tells a story,” Goriss remarked.
As the WNBL season progresses, the Flames’ latest victory places them just one win shy of the finals, while the Capitals will look to regroup and capitalize on their next opportunity.
